Proposalfor HANDA Mobile Prosthesis Workshop 2014-2015
Project Background
In china, most ofpeople affected by leprosy are at an average age of above 65 with kinds ofdisabilities due to late detection and treatment. They used to live by doingheavy farm work in the old days but lacked of sense of self-care. Years ofwounds without proper treatment resulted in serious plantar ulcer, osteomyelitis and cancer, finally led to amputation. Without suitableprostheses, their stumps continue to develop new ulcer. The artificial limbs ofmost of the people, which have been provided by other NGO or private factoryyears ago were heavy and unfit. But no people from thesemanufacturers were willing to enter the villages to for follow-up maintenance, the prostheses without appropriately adjustment became merely decoration.
Lack of self-care knowledge to protect the deformity limbs and heavylabor farming to maintain their life aggravated their deformities. Insensitivehands and feet lead to serious ulcer, and then developosteomyelitis orulcer canceration. Many of theamputees are still using simple tools and metal to install prostheses on theirown, but since the installation of these prostheses lack appropriate technologyand materials, it often resulted in serious injury or new ulcers, making thelimbs not able to accept any new prostheses.
To tackle with the problem and to expand our service areaand provide timely service for morepeople affected by leprosyregardless of remotelocation, with the generous support from Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation, the mobile prosthesis workshop was initiated. Mobile workshop enabled the team travel to theremote area and carry out their work without delay.
According to the field survey, the new case of amputation each year inGuangdong is about 20. Usually the prosthesis wearing during is about twoyears, it is because the amputated stump may grow into adifferent shape in two years, making the original prosthesis not suitable. HANDAprosthesis team not only produces prosthesis and orthopedic device for needy people but also provides trainingand timely maintenance.
The projectconsists with 2 project staffs, one prosthesis technician and 1 assistanttechnician who also work as this project driver. Through 10 years work with villagers,we acquired valuable experience and skills, theteam has accumulated rich technique experience and their work is warmlywelcomed by the people.
